HUMANITIES 1 M-F 03:30 – 05:30   (Mediafire Link: Over here)

(With me being in school right now and Mediafire being blocked, this is the best I can do with Google Docs on the first try. Will upload Mediafire links once I get home. Hope this works!)

ETA 5/28 at 5:58 pm: Added Mediafire links!

NOTE: Before you raise concerns and complaints, please review the class contract you’ve signed at the beginning of the semester and review the university manual as well. I’m aware that I might have been too lenient with class attendance, but I entrusted you with the responsibility of keeping yourselves in check lest you go beyond the allowed number of absences. That means for people who get an exact 3.0 or a passing grade will still be subject to pass or failure depending on your attendance. I DID warn you of the consequences. I have your contracts with me in case  you have forgotten our agreement.

Please let me know any discrepancies on or before 1 JUNE 2012. The deadline for the grades is around 4 June, but I am well aware that some of you might need those grades as early as possible for certain reasons (working scholars, transfer credentials, enrollment). So please review your grades and tell me if I made a mistake somewhere. Some of the papers have already been given back to you, so please present those when you make your claim. If the paper in question is with me, I will be the one to check.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE THE “TO TAKE THE REMOVAL” REMARK BESIDE THEIR GRADES: You have this remark either because of 1) a passing grade despite your status of being dropped, or 2) you getting a 3.1 or a 3.2. In any case, I am giving you a chance to redeem yourselves.  I will see you on Thursday, May 31, 1:00 PM at the Department of Languages and Literature in Talamban Campus (Arts and Sciences building, 1st floor). Coverage of the exam will be from the very beginning. I will only give you ten questions – the very basic ones that have something to do with the root of the course. If you do not pass the first removal, you will be subjected to a second one until you pass … or give up. Failure to take the removal exam will automatically mean a 5.0.

EDITED TO ADD: You may claim your scrapbooks at the department starting tomorrow. Failure to do so WITHIN THE WEEK will give me the right to dispose of them in any way I deem appropriate. Say so if you wish to get them next week.

QUESTIONS GO AUTOMATICALLY TO MY FACEBOOK INBOX OR IN THE COMMENT BOX BELOW. I cannot promise to answer you ASAP due to my recent health conditions and departmental obligations, but rest assured I will answer your questions the next chance I get. But please, for the love of all that is good and holy, stop asking me questions that you can already answer on your ownI will NOT entertain questions like “My grade is 3.6, do I still have a chance?” or “Where can I see my grades?” anymore. You should know by now how I do things; and ignorance is not anymore an excuse.

With that said, I thank you for putting up with me for two months! I hope you have learned something from my classes, and that I have made your summer more worthwhile and not boring. :)

Please download the analysis sheet over here. Questions will be entertained only until Saturday night (since I won’t be able to make it online on Sunday).

As you already know, I am not going to be in class on May 2 because of a seminar I will have to attend. This post is for you to be aware of your assignments and tasks.

I. THE VISUAL ELEMENT GRID – DEADLINE: MAY 7, 2012

Materials: You will need a sheet of oslo paper and your coloring materials – preferably drawing materials.

Directions:

You are to divide the oslo paper into 8 equal parts by folding twice along the length of the paper and once along the width. You should be able to get a grid like this (click on the thumbnail for full size):

Assign one visual element per division of the oslo paper. You may write down your elements on your paper before you do the next part, or you can assign the elements later.

Next, you are to draw any of these options using the ENTIRE space of the oslo paper:

> ONE figure, or

> ONE animal, or

> ONE combination of things in ONE setting.

You are to draw your chosen option taking into consideration the visual elements that you have previously assigned to your grid. I know it’s difficult to comprehend by reading this post, so here are some examples to help you understand. Click on the links below to direct you to the examples.

A visual element grid consisting of a SINGLE ANIMAL drawn with all visual elements.

A visual element grid consisting of a SINGLE FIGURE drawn with all visual elements.

A visual element grid consisting of a SINGLE COMBINATION OF THINGS IN A SINGLE SETTING.

As you noticed, each of these students drew these objects keeping in mind the divisions of the grid. Here is my Facebook album for other examples of the grids.  Keep in mind that you have to stick to the divisions of the grid, and keep only one element per division. (You may however, separate texture from pattern, and value from color). I will know if your visual element grid is effective if I can tell apart the visual elements you used per division without having to rely on your labels.

You may also use either portrait or landscape orientation for your grids.

At the back of the visual element grid, please write the following details:

Name:

Schedule:

Date:

Title of Visual Element Grid:

Please label your divisions with the visual elements you used.

Further questions go directly to my Facebook inbox or you may ask questions within the week. Deadline is on Monday. I will not accept late visual element grids, so make sure you use the extra day to think of whatever you will be drawing. You may, of course, ask the help of your more artistic friends if ever you have art problems.

II. ART PRE-ANALYSIS: PREPARATION FOR THE LONG EXAM ON THURSDAY

I want you to look at the following paintings and try to examine each painting according to what you have learned about the visual elements. I will give a 15-item seatwork on this on Thursday before we have the long exam. And again, the seatwork is open-notes, but the long exam and the midterms will be closed-notes.

Artwork number 1

Artwork number 2

Artwork number 3

Try to remember the questions I always give in our pretests – and you will have at least a hint of what you will be doing on Thursday, on the long exam, and on the midterm exam itself.

If you have any questions, I will try my best to answer them before 6 pm on May 2. Please PM me on Facebook or just leave a comment here.

With that being said, I thank you for putting up with me for five months. I wish you well on your next endeavors as college students, and I hope you have learned something – be it Humanities-based or not – from my classes. :)

NOTA BIEN: AGAIN, READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE POST. THANK YOU. :)

I. SCULPTURE-MAKING GUIDELINES

In your group (the group for the Finals), you are to make either a free-standing or a relief sculpture using only one of the following media:

• soap
• candle
• food or textile (for HRM and/or BCTA students especially if  you wish. Don’t submit spoiled goods, mkay?)

You may use any kind of materials for the sculpture-making process as you wish.

On a sheet of bondpaper, you are to evaluate your sculpture using the art evaluation process and using the same questions as you did for Art Criticism Activity # 1.

I. Subject. What is the subject all about?  Is it rep or non-rep? How is it represented? What kind of subject is there?
II. Medium. How is the artwork made? What materials did the artist (you) use?
III. Organization. What are the dominant visual elements in this artwork? How about principles of design? How does the overall organization and combination of visual elements and principles of design contribute to the aesthetic effect of this artwork?
IV. Style. What sculpture-making process are you utilizing? Did you have any particular artist’s style in mind as you went along? Were you thinking of inducing formality in your sculpture like what Classical / Renaissance artists do, or were you thinking of creating drama just like what Baroque artists do? Or did you go along with the flow like what modern artists do?
V. Judgment. Would the sculpture embody all the characteristics of sculpture as it should? Is your finished sculpture delightful to your artistic and aesthetic tastes? Are you satisfied with what you did?

Submit the finished sculpture on the same date for the scrapbook. ETA: Specific formatting guidelines: Garamond, font size 12, single spacing, 1 inch margin all sides. Do not forget to write your names.

II. REMINDERS ON THE FINAL PROJECT: SCRAPBOOK

I REPEAT AND I REPEAT: I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY LATE SUBMISSIONS. The deadline is on MARCH 24, SATURDAY, AT 12 NOON. I will give an allowance until late afternoon for those who will be late. Until the LAST WORKING SCHOLAR LEAVES, I WILL ACCEPT YOUR PROJECT. Please submit your scrapbooks to the Speech Office (Room 360) as I will not be personally around due to my involvement in the Commencement Rites. Group leaders, you need to fill out the evaluation sheet I will leave at the office before you go or else you will lose 50 points.

I need to give your grades on Monday or Tuesday after that so that you will be able to raise concerns if you must and take TWO REMOVAL EXAMS if you still insist I shall let you pass the course.

ETA: Only those who have a final grade of 3.1 and 3.2 will be allowed to take the removal exams. The rest will be given 5.0 on the spot.

Further questions go to Facebook, or text me at 09238275988 FOR IMMEDIATE CONCERNS. You are NOT to use this number for trivial questions and the like. Please, and thank you :)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Commerce students who have already done the SBE Week Assignment are exempted from this activity. You will not have to do anything for this particular task. No homework for you :)

——————-

Form groups with 3-4 members each and assign a leader.

The group will be assigned a particular group number. Please have the leader text me at 09238275988 so that you can be assigned with a number. Make sure that your group leader reaches me on or before Saturday night. Failure to adhere to this instruction will invalidate your seatwork. I will be too busy on Sunday (as that is the first day for the tour) and on Monday, so do not bother me on those days.

Once you have been assigned a group number, please refer to THIS POST. Deadline for this is Tuesday, February 28.

If you have any questions, ask away. I’ll see you next week for the continuation of our discussion on art history. Get ready for a open-notes quiz.

As I have mentioned in class, I will be at Talamban Campus this week to participate in the activities for DOLL Week. Please note the following alternate learning activities:

1. For Tuesday: Please download the powerpoint presentations on Principles of DesignSculpture and Structural Systems in Architecture from WordPress / Mediafire or my SkyDrive. Please read and study the notes on your own. These are fairly understandable lectures so studying them will be an easy task to do. Researching about them is quite easy too – you can just use Google or Wikipedia. Consider this as your first independent research on the course. But of course, if you have any questions regarding the content, you can always ask me online.

SkyDrive links:

Principles of Design // Sculpture // Structural Systems in Architecture

2. For Thursday: You are to watch the documentary “Big Bigger Biggest: Skyscrapers” on Youtube. You may search using the keywords “Building the Burj Dubai”. Make sure you will be able to tell the 7 skyscrapers mentioned and the corresponding engineering leaps that each building demonstrates from memory. You don’t have to take down notes. Please check this Youtube link if this is still working (ETA: It IS working just fine :D ).

If you can’t watch on Youtube, I have left a CD at the Speech Office (Main Campus, room 360). Make sure you can borrow it ON THURSDAY, but please return it immediately after you have copied the file. Please ask me if you still haven’t managed to watch it by Friday.

We will have a post test on February 14 regarding all three topics plus the film showing. Closed notes.

You are expected to be informed of these instructions when I get back. It will be your loss if you don’t have the initiative to ask me in any way you can.

I want you to survey each of these ten pictures and try to answer the following questions on your own. You may discuss with a classmate if you want. You are not required to download anything or write anything as well; it’s fine.

1. Look at these three pictures and try to determine if they’re supposed to be realistic. If not, try to find a reason why. Hint: Use whatever you had learned from the class discussion in order to form a coherent answer.

Pond

Zannana (I know it’s small, but please do look at it closely as I cannot provide a bigger picture.)

Persimmons

2. What kind of perspective is the first picture? How about the second one?  How do you know?

School

Building

3. Same question with #2. Additional: try to look at this painting with regards to the characteristics of said perspective this picture has.

Mountains

4. What perspective technique is shown in this picture? Which figures exhibit this technique? Try to defend your answer.

Witch

5. Look at the following pictures and answer this question: How does the manipulation of space and perspective make things / artworks more interesting?

Flaw

Waterfall

Don’t Die!

Take your time answering, and I’ll discuss them on Tuesday.

You may access the corresponding Humanities folder by using the On to Mediafire! link above or go directly to the folder right here.

I gave you the password for those two files already during class, so please refrain from asking for it in the comments below.

The ppt for Visual Elements 1 is for another class though, so you won’t be able to download it using the pass I gave you. :)

Further questions will be raised next meeting. Don’t forget to download the MS Word notes on Visual Elements 4 and 5.

I have already sent you the email regarding the powerpoint for Visual Elements 1. There are two links included – one on Mediafire (password-protected) and one on SkyDrive. I apologize if I cannot divulge the links or give the password in this post though for security purposes.

This is only a notice for you to check your respective emails. Please do so and at the very least, confirm that you have received it! Thank you.
